"My grandmother was also a watchmaker. She finished her education in 1919 in Budapest, and as such became the first female watchmaker in Austria-Hungary."
Oaza: We are standing in one of the oldest watchmaker shops in Zagreb. How did you get into this trade?
Stella Gašparac: The business was founded by my grandfather in 1919 in Slovenia, and since 1932 it has been located in Zagreb. It has been at this location since 1945. It is a family business. I am the third generation of watchmakers in my family. My grandmother was also a watchmaker. She finished her education in 1919 in Budapest, and as such became the first female watchmaker in Austria-Hungary. I graduated from the school in Gundulićeva Street in 1977. I inherited the love for this job from them.
O: Who are your customers?
SG: They are all kinds of people. I am glad when my old customers come back.
O: What has changed in the meantime in your profession?
SG: Everything. In the old days, people would buy a watch with their first paycheck and wear it for 30-40 years. Today, a watch is bought as a designer fashion accessory, to show how much it cost.
